Wavemakers: Sara R. Cohen

| July 21, 2012

Wavemakers is a joint weekly feature by Femme-O-Nomics’ founder Leah Eichler and Mic Berman(@MicBerman) that profiles female innovators — women who are constantly blazing new trails, inspiring others and revolutionizing the status quo.

This week we meet Sara R. Cohen, a fertility lawyer based in Toronto but with clients throughout Canada and beyond.  She is an advocate for all people accessing assisted reproductive technologies. You can follow her @fertilitylaw.

1. Describe your current state of mind.

Excited, inspired, and empowered.

2. If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be?

I’m feeling pretty fortunate to be me right now.  However, I would like to come back as me but having already learned all the tough lessons and figuring out who I am and what it is that I would like to do with my life earlier.  I do understand that life is a journey, but I regret time not well spent.

3. What is your greatest indulgence?

Lattes and lunches out! The only way I can justify these is that I often enjoy both while networking.  My other greatest indulgence is travel – and I wish I could indulge in that more often.

4. What or who helped you the most to achieve your success?

I’m inspired daily by women working in careers where they are helping others, in various capacities. Dr. Elaine Herer (an OBGYN at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto) has been very influential in my life, likely without intending to be so.   She never fails to impress me with her strength, compassion, knowledge and no BS attitude.  Seeing such a strong, professional woman care so much about others inspired me to move into a career where I could help other people, too.

5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Do good work and love what you do - the rest will follow. A quote that I love is “who you are speaks so loudly I can’t hear what you are saying.” I am a genuine person and it’s perhaps the quality I am most proud of.
